Question - (9 June 2012) 2 Answers - (Newest, 10 June 2012)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Last year, we had to move, so we went house hunting. We looked for a couple of weeks, then my husband fell in love with a place that seemed a great bargain. Well, when we went to look at it again, I realized it is in a bad area. I talked to him many times over this, and he just called me paranoid, and bought it anyway, mainly because it was so cheap, and looked mostly good cosmetically.

Well, after being there a couple of months, the house accross the street was burglarized, then I found out there was a murder a couple of years ago in this neighborhood, during a burglary. The front door didn't have a deadbolt, and barely could stay closed. When we moved in, there were stacks of steel bars in the garage; the former owner had taken the off the doors and windows to sell the place. My husbsand had to pay a couple of thousand to have all those bars reinstalled. I said to myself, as a child, I'd never live in a place needing bars. I am afraid if there is a fire, I might not be able to get my 6 month old girl and myself out if my husband is not here. I told him this, and he didn't care, saying if I kicked hard enough the bars *might* come loose.

Now, I find the place is infested with these huge palmetto bugs, and I just can't take it anymore. I love my husband, but hate this house so much. It is always needing something costing hundreds or thousands of dollars, the neighborhood is bad, now these damned palmetto bugs. I just can't stand this place, and everyday here makes me more depressed. I spent the day dealing with insecticides, and I am so sick of this hell hole.

I am afraid this house will cause us to divorce, as he loves the place. I love him so much, but cannot live like this anymore.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 June 2012):

For the palmetto bug problem:

Buy roach bait traps (the large ones) and put them under sinks, behind toilets, in corners in the kitchen and other rooms where you have seen them but make sure they are out of reach of children!

If you have any decaying leaves or grass clippings in your yard, get rid of them. They breed in this stuff. If you have gutters, clean them out. My gutters had nests with them last summer.

Use caulk or tape to seal up all cracks and crevices under and around the sink or vanity in the bathroom. I even had to caulk around the plastic light switch plate in my bathroom to keep them out of the inside of my house.

Next, all food in the kitchen must be put up at night. No dirty dishes or cups in the sink. Counters and surfaces need to be food-free, the floor swept and trash taken out every night. This helps keep them under control.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the size and appearance of the various stages of palmetto bug. Nymphs can be tiny to almost as big as a palmetto bug, but they look like weird beetles instead of palmetto bugs. Whenever you see them, kill them. The smaller nymphs can be sprayed with windex or pledge multi-purpose solution to slow them down a bit.

aunt honesty agony auntIf you feel that this place is not safe for you and your baby, then you should do the right thing and get out of here. Explain to him how you feel and tell him it is either you all move as a family to somewhere more reliable or else you will be leaving on your own as a single mother. I know it is a hard choice to make but it sounds to me like he is more interested in what other people have to think than the safety for his wife and child. Do what is right.
