A male United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey all, any advice on this is greatly appreciated.Im 19 and my girlfriends 18, weve been together since we were 16, and i can honestly say i think we will be together for many more years, there's just one thing that might prevent that, the army.

I fooled around in school, and left with 4 gcses grade c, so in sixth form when i should of been doing A levels, i did Gcse sport and got 9 gcses grade A*, i then did 1 A level in sport at merit level, and its now time for me to leave sixth form and i have not many qualifications, nothing that i really want to do, yet my future is flying at me so fast i hardly have time to breathe.

However my girlfriend is a year younger than me, so is only in her second year of sixth form and is ready to leave for university in september, she's not going far and she is staying living at home, so that wont be a problem. She has left with 3 a levels and her welsh bac, meaning that she got accepted into cardiff university to do a course that will enable her to get the qualifications that she needs to beable to open up her own private nursery.

Her life seems to be on track, yet i dont know what to do with mine, so the easiest option seems to be join the army. Yet my girlfriend wont allow me, she says if i join the army the relationship is unfortunately over for good. You may think this is completley unfair, as it would be in a normal circumstance. Yet in 2007 my girlfriend lost her brother in the Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) age 27. He's left a two year old daughter and his wife behind, his family and everybody is devastated. My girlfriend says she can't go through that again, wondering if i would be alive and well, the pain of missing me so much it hurts, and then if it comes to it the phone call home telling her i have been killed which hopefully will never happen. She's seen the ruins its left her sister in law in, and the way its affected her parents.

I dont want to admit it, but i am going in the army as its the easiest option, and seems to be one of the only options available. I love my girlfriend to pieces though, she is what keeps me going, i wish my life away everyday wishing it to be when i can see her next. Leaving her is going to be tough, but leaving her knowing that she is not mine, and when i come home she could be with another man kills me inside, just the thought of it.

What shall i do? Im completley stuck. Help :'(

Hi

I think joining the army is the last thing you should do there are so many options and courses available for you in England you just have to choose the right one for you.

Something in fitness would be good if it's something you enjoy my

boyfriend is a personal trainer and loves it he also earns very good money from it. The courses are not very long either.

Anyway maybe there are other things you are going to be interested in why join the army and risk losing your life or hurting the people around you.

Also don't forget many innocent people in other countries are killed by the British army do you want to be responsible for those innocent lives?

Have a sit down and think of all the things you may be interested in doing i.e different courses, apprenticeships or starting a real job.

Good luck.

hey there!

There are millions of other things that you can do other than join the army. Dont feel that you have to enlist, and dont do it as a last resort. Thats not the morale that the boys who WANT to be there need, and it would never make you happy!

As for what you can do, it sounds like you like sports a lot, so why dont you look into personal training qualifications and working at a gym as a personal trainer?

Or you could look at university of college places that offer training to be a PE teacher, if that interests you... or a sports coach for children or adults teams if you play any specific sports. You can also train to be a sports referree (usually a part time thing but better than nothin while you sort your life out!)

other than sports related jobs there are loads of things you can do to have some money while you figure out what to do with your life, and lots of vocational qualifications you can get to do all sorts of different jobs.

Your best bet is to go to your local JobCenter and have a talk wiht the people there, they have all the info on all the options in your area!

Good luck and dont join the army if you dont want to with 100% of your heart! :D
