I think you should confront him about it. And by the way this is written I get the feeling that you're actually a student. But I'm not here to judge.Just know the risk that are at hand if you decide to confront him, or have a relationship with him.
If you're actually working in another department then I encourage you to think this through thoroughly. Getting involved with an employee is risky business, but if you confront him and he say that he likes you then you do what you feel like.
And no I don't think it would be weird if you smiled back
