There are various "types" of herpes viruses. But even a yeast infection, which is fungal, can also cause coldsores- usually at the corners of the mouth. These are typically treatable within a few days with an ointment containing nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide applied daily. You should probably consult a doctor about whether a yeast infection, also called thrush, could lead to genital herpes, but I don't think so. It depends, perhaps, on what really causes his coldsores.
