reader, anonymous, writes (13 January 2013): I had a boyfriend at your age who did that too. But years later, i realised he was a people pleaser which what your boyfriend sounds like. Also, i used to be a bit like that and so i understand it's because he's insecure. I personally found it annoying, but it's up to you. I don't think he'll change, but if he likes you, as it does sound, don't take it personally.

You must understand young males flirt without thinking about it...there's no intent or expectation it's just as normal as breathing. Until we men reach about 25 or 30 we don't "self edit" that is attempt to view our actions or speach as others might see us. We are a very insecure lot and are always looking for positive feedback.
