A reader, anonymous, writes (27 January 2008):

I think he means he is very fond of you and does not want to ruin your friendship by making it something else, he sounds like he is trying to respect you and be your friend, that is pretty simple to understand....relationships evolve or they simply die away...who knows what the future will bring for you two, but for now enjoy his friendship and be respectful of his feelings.

A male reader, That Guy United States +, writes (27 January 2008):

He might be hiding his feelings but he might just mean what he said. To love someone as a friend is almost like loving a family member; I can't think of a better way to explain it really. Two of my closest friends (that are girls) always tell me they love me (as a friend) and I tell them the same.

As far as whether he really feels that way or is just hiding his emotions is hard to say. He might also be unsure of whether he loves you or is in love with you, so he could be unintentionally hiding his feelings if that makes sense.

In otherwords, it doesn't mean he's hiding his feelings if he said that. The best thing you can do is probably ask him what he meant by that and see if he can give a better explanation than I (or anyone else who tries to answer your question) as no one other than him can know exactly what he meant by that, as "love as a friend" might mean something different to him than it does to others. So, I think you should ask him.
