The thing to ask yourself is do you believe the rumours? and how would you feel after being with him as he is your friends ex? Only you can answer these questions however as no one can tell you how to feel.
As for how to, you should come clean with him and tell him you don't know what to do. Then he should tell you what he likes meaning you can satisfy him better.

 You are sixteen so i can not see the problem with it, however i find it very difficult to try and explain, the best person you can speak to about this is your partner when you have one, and they can guide you.
