Everything that my wife has read has told her that douching is not a good idea and she hasn't done it for at least 20 years. The vagina is one of the 2 parts of the body (the eyes being the other) that are self cleaning.

DiovanLestat is right, it's not really a recommended practice, even though it is common. Your interal pH and natural bacteria are in balance, and if you start douching, it may be difficult to get that natural balance right. Just wash the exterior carefully and with gentler cleansers and you should be fine.

reader, anonymous, writes (19 June 2008): Sorry, but I don't believe in this practice at any age. It kills the natural bacteria in the vagina and gives you less rather than more protection. Vaginal fluid is beautiful and needs no extra cleaning that I can see, but I realise others have different practices, so I hope you get advice that suits you better.
