I met another girl in my program three weeks ago, and out of nowhere, I've completely fallen for her. She is a very proud lesbian, very active in politics and awareness campaigns.I have no idea if she'd like me, even if she knew I liked her. We're very different. She's incredibly liberal and I'm incredibly conservative in many ways. But, that can also make life interesting.Nonetheless, I am falling in love with her quickly, and it's killing me. I talk to her briefly about every other day in class, and once a week we spend time together in a study group we were both assigned to. She has mentioned how important it is to have a support network, but since I just moved to the state, I don't have one, yet, and I let her know that. She offerred to sit down with me and talk sometime, and I told her I'd love to. She came up to me last weekend at a school function and asked if I'd like to get lunch or something this week. We're getting together tomorrow afternoon.The first problem is that she has no idea how I feel about her, or even that I could be interested in another girl. The second, is even if I could let her know without scaring her to death, I'm worried she won't like me back and it will make class and our study group very awkward. Finally, she's the only woman I feel this way about, and if she did reject me, and then all of a sudden everyone in our program found out, I would be devastated.Any advice? How to get her to notice me? How to tell if she likes me? How to talk about it? How to get her to know I'm interested? I've never done anything like this and I'm so confused!

reader, anonymous, writes (28 August 2008): Update:It turns out that she recently started long-distance dating a woman she met this summer, and she's crazy about her and thinks she might be her life partner.I talked to her about it, and she said she was flattered and everything, and we had a great conversation, but things have been awkward ever since.I'm heartbroken.
