okay so this question is about losing weight. i've always wanted to lose weight because i look at myself and i think i'm not good enough for my own self. i stress on my body and i'm very self conscious about it, even though people say i have a nice body. but anyways, i went to the doctor last week. and i got weighed. they told me i lost 3 pounds since last yr. i was excited about that. i guess it's because i wasn't very active last year but i played sports this year. but then i've been wanting to lose more weight. for the past 2 days, i've been running and exercising. i woke up this morning and jumped on the scale and it said i lost 3 more pounds. i got excited about that but also worried. is this something i should be worried about or should i be proud? i mean 6 pounds in the past yr is a lot for me... i've always been thin. is it just because i've been exercising more? i mean i don't eat healthy at all (even though i know i should) but yeah. and my mom was also like how do you keep losing weight? and i'm like i don't know! so what should i think? thanks.

I completley agree with the poster below, is it the first time you have worked out?

Sometimes our bodies need to adjust to the change, and rapid weight loss could be part of that adjustment.

Usually, our bodies will plateau and it will be harder to lose the weight.

you say "you've always been thin" yet you're worrying about your weight? You KNOW you are a reasonable weight, so believe that you are a gorgeous girl and don't stress too much!!

Susan Strict agony aunt6 pounds since last year sounds like a reasonable rate - assuming you were overweight in the first place. But if half of that was lost in the last week then I'd say that was far too fast for comfort - and you risk doing serious damage to yourself, particular as you say you've always been thin.

Losing weight can be obsessive. It can also kill you. Excessive dieting tends to be counter-productive, because all that happens is that your body adjusts to operating at near-starvation level and as soon as you eat enough to keep a hamster alive it all turns straight to flab (that's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean!).

Exercise can also be obsessive - and it's very much addictive. Exercising past the point it starts to hurt does burn off weight fast, but it also makes your body produce a painkilling drug closely related to morphine (opium, heroine etc) that is most definitely habit-forming. You also risk doing other damage to yourself.

Yes, you can lose 3 pounds in two days. I lost just over 7 pounds in under 7 hours when I ran the London Marathon five years ago ("ran" is not strictly true. I walked for some of it. A lot of it.) But you wouldn't run a marathon on a regular basis because if it didn't actually kill you it would most certainly damage your body beyond repair unless you had spent years training to become a real athlete. It doesn't work for most of us. Moderation and common sense is required. Take it gently, and aim at a weight that's right for your height and age - and there are loads of web sites where you can check your "ideal" weight. DON'T let yourself go under the recommended minimum, or you run very real risks of serious complications.

What you can do is look in a weight chart based on your height and age. You can just google it. In the chart, you put in your age and height, and it will tell you the ideal weight for you. Loosing 6 pounds in a year doesn't sound so bad, but that only depends on your type of body. If you're underweight now (after you check on the chart), you should try to gain weight a bit. People who are underweight look sick and NOT attractive, like some people at your age think
