If you are good friends now, then opening general communication in this area should be easy. You could approach it like "Wish I was going with you, I could use a little adventure in my life" and see if he bites. As you know, as soon as you express yourself, it will change things forever one way or another. You could even try a more bold approach like, "It's a good thing you're leaving, I might have asked you out to dinner" and see if he laughs or...
