I've had this massive crush on him since I met him and it doesn't help matters that we have so much in common and his mum likes me more than his girlfriend! I don't know what to do. I've never had a boyfriend before so can't use old experiences.

The ball's in his court here. You need to wait until the problems become so bad that they break up. Only then can you start a relationship with him. If he likes you and wants to be with you then their problems will get worse and he'll finish it. Until then you just need to be patient and remain his friend.
