At that point, you can decide to date him and lose a friend, or keep your friend and realize there are many other boys you could date.

 He hasn't asked you out in a year. He's not interested in you. If you pursue him, then be prepared to lose your friend. It is an unwritten code of behavior between friends, you don't date their exes.
