It's a big risk financially to finish my degree, will it be worth it?

A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'd just like some "life advice" please aunties.

I have just finished my second year at Uni, and am due to start my third in September. However, I have lost interest in a large part my course (it wasn't really what I was expecting) and don't really want to go back. It would just feel like I would be "going through the motions". Add to the fact that I'm not even sure that I would earn my degree anyway.

On the other hand, I live deep in the country and there are literally no places of work for about 30 miles where the nearest City is. I would have to take a risk and move out and move into into a flat, and, well like everyone else, my financial situation isn't exactly the best so it would be a big risk.

I really don't know what to do. Life is all about risks right? I would like to complete my degree, but with the almost half of the final year consisting of assignments that are not really my strong point, I'm not sure going back would be all that helpful. But on the other hand, with the current "credit crunch" and all that, and my not brilliant financial situation, moving out into a city would be a huge step...and then the best job I would probably get would be stacking shelves lol.

I have tried to talk to my mum, but she is point-blank adamant that I should finish my degree, and refuses to listen to any of my concerns about it.

I hope this question doesn't come across as "pretentious" in some way. I know everyone takes risks, I know everyone doesn't have the best jobs or a lot of money.

But I just simply don't know what to do.

lexilou agony auntI nearly gave up half way through my degree too but stuck it out and came out with a 2:1. I got married moved house and had a baby in my final year ( I was an older student!!). I am so glad I didnt give up and in hindsight I wish I had done it when I was younger but I didnt because i wanted to stay with boyfriend who became my first husband. If id have known he would batter me and I would divorce him I would turn the clock back, but I cant.

Ok you are unhappy in your course. Why not talk to your course tutor, you already have UCAS points so why not see about changing to a course you may actually like. My nephew has just completed one year at manchester on a course he hated, and has now switched to sheffield on a different course and is actually looking forward to going back. However at christmas we had to FORCE him to complete his first year. Dont give up, look at the alternatives before you make a decision you could end up regretting for years to come x
