Last month I had sex with my boyfirend, and then not again until yesterday. I had not started my period for april , so i was slightly late and i experienced terrible discomfort and pain during sex. Within a hour, I had started my period but it was unusally heavy, and still is. It is possible that I miscarried without even knowing I was pregnant?

I had a miscarriage at Christmas time while knowing I was 10 wks pregnant. With a miscarriage you can start with spotting and then contractions until the contents of the womb (pregnancy) are lost. For me it was dull achy pain for days followed by very painful contractions for about 30-40 mins in which it was clear that the pregnancy was lost + placenta. The period that follows is usually very heavy and long (10 days to 21 days ish). In your case, it is possible but there are other explanations too - you say you were late and therefore the build-up of the lining of the womb (that comes out as a period) would have been greater. Sex doesn't cause a miscarriage according to medical evidence - it is just an old wives tale. The pain could have been caused by the build up of uterine lining as it gets a bit congested in there if you don't have regular periods. Try not to worry about it too much and if your periods go irregular again get a blood test to check out a hormone imbalance...as well as a pregnancy test.

It's always possible if you're having sex. It's really important that you see the doctor as soon as possible to confirm because if you did have a miscarriage you need to have an ultrasound to check that everything is gone from your womb. Otherwise you could get a serious internal infection.
