Question - (27 April 2016) 4 Answers - (Newest, 27 April 2016)
A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I met a guy for a first date last night. I noticed after one pint he looked flushed and had broken blood vessels around his nose and a thickening of connective tissue around the nostrils, a bumpy appearance.

He then had a second pint and had driven there. Being outspoken I asked if he was an alcoholic. He laughed and said he liked a drink but suffered with rosacae which is adult acne. Would this condition solely be responsible for his appearance?

aunt honesty agony auntSo he had two pints of beer and everyone assumes that he is an alcoholic? That is very quick to judge someone, especially on a site like this.

Look at the end of the day if he is an alcoholic you will soon be able to tell. However him having two pints on a date does not make him an alcoholic, yes it might make his condition worse, but he could also have been stressed about meeting you and that is why his symptoms appeared worse.

Honeypie agony auntRosacea is a common, chronic, incurable, adult acne-like skin condition that is easily controllable and medically manageable.

Rosacea triggers include alcohol, hot or spicy foods, emotional stress, and heat.

So in short, YES.

If he doesn't take meds for it, it will only get worse. Same with the various triggers that can make it more pronounced.

A male reader, Garbo United States +, writes (27 April 2016):

Garbo agony auntHis facial redness can be from rosacea. Alcohol can cause the flushing which is called erythema and is mistaken for alcoholism. Same with blood vessels. They can blow up or be permanently dilated like that so you see them. There is a name for that condition too but I forgot it right now. Also thickening of the skin is caused by rosacea, have excess tissue, particularly on the nose. US presidential candidate Cruz has that on his nose and has been called alcoholic because of that. The nose thing is called rhinophyma. However, it would be nice if he drank less.
