I am writing about a teacher-student relationship but before I begin - the student(and teacher) are both adults over 21. The student is no longer at the institution where the teacher works but is an ex con as the teacher works in adult jail. The question I would like to know is is this situation acceptable? Yeah I think the rules in the States and UK do differ on this one, it is more about professional conduct than a legal issue here, but you guys do give a very good point and I think we are all in agreement that this is WRONG!

Don't be so hasty to say this is legal.
I don't know where you are but in Georgia in the U.S., there is a law against a school employee having sex of any kind with a student. It is a felony with a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
I don't know if this law would apply if the student is 21 y.o. and the school was housed in a jail facility. Some of these things are intentionally left unclear to allow the court to do as it pleases.
So, you sure wouldn't want to find out if it applies by being arrested and having a trial.

NO. The teacher was in a position of trust with a vulnerable adult and has abused that trust, so it is not acceptable morally, even though legally it is fine!
If you thought this was acceptable you wouldn't be asking the question would you? It is a very grey area, and I would be interested to see the companies policy on inmate/staff relationships. But in my opinion it is morally wrong.
