Not a lot of information provided about the problem here, but "woman-on-top" is a great position that allows the female a lot of control (such as angle, depth, movements, etc) and also frees the male to use his hands on breasts, torso, legs and other areas.
Most notably, it is much less strenuous for the male and therefore provides a bit of a rest period during an extended session of love making. Everyone has their preferences or favorites, but "woman-on-top" is one of mine and I suspect for many, both male and female.
It difficult to understand how your man thinks you are "doing it wrong." It's pretty simple, really. The lady may use either a more upright body position, or lean over the man with her hands on the bed or floor (whatever) next to him. She provides most of the up and down (in and out) motion although he should thrust upward in synchronization with her. She also can use the position to provide more stimulation to her clitoris and "grind" against his public mound above his penis.
One problem this poses for some men, if they cannot withhold for long, is premature ejaculation because it is very sensual.
An interesting variation is for the man to place his legs over hers in a reclined position (almost seated), which vastly increases clitoral stimulation yet maintains good penetration. There are other variations, but I think more patience, experimentation and practice would be advised here.
