Dieting is not all about eating less or starving yourself. A lot of people have the wrong notion about what dieting is all about. Eating more vegetables or cutting down on fatty food is still all about the dieting process. Dont get confused on that. If you really want to lose weight then there has to be some cutting back (dieting) and exercise i'm afraid.

Yea sure...burn off more calories then you consume derrr...don't starve yourself or eat a lot less as this will slow your metabolism and when you go back to eating the same you'll put weight back on.

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (16 March 2007):

DrPsych agony auntAs Dr Pete has said, your BMI isn't that bad and you have to remember that at 16 your body is still developing so you could potentially lose weight or change shape in the next couple of years. I didn't stop growing until I was about 20. I think diets don't work out for a lot of people as it is a short-term solution. My advice would be to do more exercise - I have lost about 14lbs this year by walking to work and back (3 miles) and I feel so much better. I didn't really need to lose the weight to start with but I was at the upper limit of normal weight BMI. I can pretty much eat and drink what I like now and I was never going to be a gym-addict. By all means look at your eating habits and cut down on the junk food but if you cut out the food you love the most then you may well end up miserable and feel guilty about food. A few years ago I was ill and gained a lot of weight - instead of dieting I lost over 3 stone by cutting down on high carbohydrate foods like rice and pasta andn having other foods instead. I didn't diet and have kept the weight off for four years without too much effort. If you are really worried, why not see a doctor who can give you some general dietary advice.

A reader, I Dont Lie +, writes (16 March 2007):

I Dont Lie agony auntSorry, if an easy way is what you're looking for to shed weight, you wont find it anywhere. Diet and exercising goes hand in hand, and theres no two ways about it! If you've come to terms with this, then perhaps you should read on.

Diet:

Whatever you do, whether losing or gaining weight, you need to consume high protein food, ie, fish, chicken, lean beef, etc. You need to cut down on the amount of calories you take in per day as excess calories store as fat. Divide your meals into smaller portions but spread out throughout the day, preferably eat about 5-6 times a day.

Workout:

You should be doing cardio workouts, ie, cycling, running, rowing, step machine, etc. Try hitting the gym twice a week initially, then once you get comfortable with the pace, up it to three times a week. I personally wouldnt recommend you going more than 3 times a week as your body needs ample recuperation before starting on the next session. You dont have to go for long hours in the gym, a good cardio workout usually lasts for only an hour or slightly more. Also try to have your workouts in the morning, preferably on an empty stomach. Once you get into the rhythm of things, you should involve yourself in circuits (you do different cardio workouts within a given timeframe without stopping for rest).

As Ive said, diet and exercise go hand in hand, but more importance should be placed on diet. You lose weight in the kitchen, not the gym. The more you spend your time planning your daily meals, the more effective your training is going to be, simple as that. Oh, and remember to have loads of rest after a workout. What Ive listed are the basics, so you'll need to find out for yourself what sort of workout plan is suitable for you and what sorta diet plan you should follow. Hope this helps.

A female reader, Cariola United Kingdom +, writes (16 March 2007):

ok your only young and at this age it could only be puppy fat that will fall of when your older

your not morbidly obese and its not affecting your health

but if you feel that you wish to lose some weight then consult your doctor on this first but i cut out dairy really helped or just cut down on foods that are highin sugar or salt, eat natural foods such as nuts and berries to ovetrcome hunger, and keep to an exercise regime even its small like a few sit ups a day and a 15 minute jog, but do remember that as long as your happy in your self thats all that matters.

A reader, anonymous, writes (16 March 2007):

According to your weight and height, your body mass index (BMI) is 26.6 so you are only over by 1.7 points off "normal weight" however this is such a small amount that you would be clased as having a normal weight.

If you want to get in shape and more toned you need to increase your exercise and cut back a little on high fat and carb meals. At your age this is really easy, you may just need to make a couple of small changes and you'll notice the differences really quick! Certainly stay away from diets, pills etc - you don't need them you are perfectly normal!

A female reader, kellyO United Kingdom +, writes (16 March 2007):

kellyO agony auntHi Anom,

I was overweight myself some few years back slightly the same weight as you now. What u need to know is that overweight people can be beautiful too, alot of people get considered if it is getting too much cos of health reasons and the only way u can find out if it isnt too much is by seeing your gp. They determine that by considering weight, height and age.

If you are really determined to shed some weight u can do it cos i was able to. I'm afraid dieting and exercising is all part of it. I'm not a pill person and wouldnt really recommend that. Try incorporating alot of vegetable in your diet. Stir fries, carrots, cucumber. Whatever u decide to do dont try starving yourself, that never works. You have to get a good rountine and stick to it and then u can maintain your new weight and frame for a very long time without gaining the weight back again.

If u need more information u can try seeing a dietician, they really do help.

Take care and Goodluck dear.
