How effective is "the pill?" My girlfriend is on the pill for other reasons; is it safe to stop using condoms? What is the likelihood of her getting pregnant? She takes it every day without fail, is the risk of pregnancy high?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (15 January 2006):

if your girlfriend takes her pills regularly, there is a very very low chance that she will become pregnant..however, as with everything, there is always a risk. i am on the pill and it is the only type of contraceptive that my boyfriend and i have been using for a year and a half. i have never so much as had a pregnancy scare. just be cautious of STD's because the pill does nothing to prevent these. hope this helps :)
