Is it too late to tell him I'd like to hang out with him now?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

about a week ago, a guy i know asked if i wanted to hang out sometime, but the response i gave came across as being that i'm not interested in him even though i am. the only reason i responded the way i did was that i wasn't expecting him to ask me this and i also have a hard time letting people to get close to me even as just a friend because i have gotten hurt so many times in the past and i find it difficult to trust anyone. i tried to get the courage up to send him a text to see if he wanted to hang out this weekend ( he had given me his number and said i could call or text him), but i haven't been able to do this due to the fact that i'm scared. i was wondering if it is too late to ask him to hang out as i seemed to give him the wrong impression and would it be wrong to ask him to hang out at the last minute?
