I have decided that I need to go on the pill for contraception but I can't get to the family planning session in my area due to work commitsments. Is it possible just to make an appointment with a nurse or does it have to be a doctor when you first go. I think I'd feel a lot more comfortable if it was a nurse at my doctors surgery. Thanx for your help x x

I don't see any problem in asking for a nurse to prescribe the pill for you. You need to speak to somebody at the surgery and explain this to them and they will advise, all they do is take your blood pressure and maybe weigh you and then sort out a pill they think is most suited to you. There are many different varieties of pill, there is the mini pill which you have to take the same time each day and the combined pill which you take daily but not at a set time. You will be monitored to start with to see that there are no side effects like headaches, nausea. If this happens then they will try another type of pill. My first pill years ago made me feel awful with nausea, it was changed and then i was fine. Also you need to know that if you go on antibiotics for any reason the pill often does not work as effectively so you would need to use additional contraception like condoms for a short while, other than that it is easy to follow.

Most GPs surgerys have nurses who can prescribe the pill. Ring up and chat to the receptionist about it.
She's not going to want to waste the doctors time if it's just a case of "I want to go on the pill." "Ok, lets check your blood pressure, yep that's fine here you go."
The pill is a pretty simple thing, you just need to check which one is right for you and learn about the side effects and how to take it properly.
Good Luck!! xx

Hi hun, that depends if your practice nurse can prescribe or not, chances are he/she wont be able to prescribe so its most likely going to be your Doctor you'll have to see. There are quite a few versions of the pill which one you get will depend on height, weight, past medical history other medication etc. Obviously Ive never met your Doctor but presuming he/she is a professional it should take you no longer than 15mins to get a prescription in your hand. The NHS is very keen on young women using contraception so id be very surprised if you ran into any problems getting the pill. hope this helps R22

When I went on the pill I wanted to speak with a female dr/nurse, so what you do is you just phone up the drs surgery and just say you would like to speak with a female doctor or possibly a nurse about something you dont feel comfortable speaking to a man about. they should be ok with it.
