If you were clean before him, he lied. That simple.

Also, I think it's possible that he's a carrier but doesn't exhibit symptoms.

The OP here. Thanks for the answers.

He gave me genital herpes.
He told me that he tested negative. His exact words were I am clean. God knows where you got it from....

Just wait until Big Pharma comes up with some way to make a buck off routine Herpes testing. A real cure, a drug to prevent the spread of it, etc. You can bet the medical establishment will suddenly see fit to start routine testing for Herpes THEN.

I think the worst part about herpes is the fact it is so contagious and no symptoms need to be present for it to be spread. So maybe he didn't know he had it? Or maybe he's a typical guy, who knows.

No you cannot contact herpes by hugging someone, I think the guy you slept with is lying.

The guy you slept with lied. Or, he probably never got tested because he, like so many guys, is shit scared of the doctor.

This is from the CDC's website:
"Herpes symptoms can occur in both male and female genital areas that are covered by a latex condom. However, outbreaks can also occur in areas that are not covered by a condom so condoms may not fully protect you from getting herpes."
"How is genital herpes spread?
You can get herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the disease.
Fluids found in a herpes sore carry the virus, and contact with those fluids can cause infection. You can also get herpes from an infected sex partner who does not have a visible sore or who may not know he or she is infected because the virus can be released through your skin and spread the infection to your sex partner(s)."
"The average incubation period after exposure is 4 days (range, 2 to 12)"
"Most individuals infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2 are asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms that go unnoticed or are mistaken for another skin condition. As a result, 87.4% of infected individuals remain unaware of their infection."
http://www.cdc.gov/std/herpes/stdfact-herpes.htm
So I would surmise that you CAN get Herpes from skin contact DURING sex, but I don't think from hugging a person.
Are you really sure he DID test negative? Or is there a possibility that he lied?
I have never had Herpes, so I can only go by what I can read about it.
What TYPE of Herpes were you diagnosed with?
