Is it a waste of money to see an exhibition of my favorite band's pictures? Should I save my money to see them in concert?

I know this isn't much of a problem, but i would appreciate some advice. There will be an exhibition of photographs of my favourite band next month. I'm not sure if any of the band members will be at the opening night, but it's possible. One of them was at another exhibition in another country. It's in London though, and London isnt very close to where i live. Is it worth going all that way for an exhibition ?. I'm not sure whether to save up to see the band members in concert or something instead ( the band have broken up. They do solo stuff now ).It's £70 train fare, by the way. It takes two hours for me to get there. I would also need a hotel room and spending money for food and drinks.

Of course this is the fundamental question of personal decisions and economics: will I have more satisfaction after giving my limited resources of time and money, in exchange for this item or experience?

If you have experience with visual arts you will appreciate that a picture on a web page is not the same as a live exhibition of a body of work, in the same way that a recorded musical performance is not the same as a live performance. That's not to say that one is always better than the other, only that they are different. And, a live exhibit - being a kind of "performance" - usually requires a greater expenditure of time and money than clicking web links or paging through a magazine, in the same way that attending a live concert is more expensive than buying a recording or catching a piece on the radio. I've had concert experiences that were far and beyond any audio or video recording, and I've sat in some seats that I would gladly trade for a bargain-bin CD.

Photographs can be a very powerful means of artistic and documentary expression. They may give you additional insight into the personalities of these performers, the interactions among them, the significance of various pieces, or the circumstances of particular performances. Sometimes this kind of insight is fairly obvious in the photograph - when it is, you may in fact be admiring the skill and artistry of the photographer as much as the skill and artistry portrayed in the photograph. At other times it requires effort and observation on your own part to uncover the message in the photograph.

On the other hand, this exhibit may be simply a collection of snapshots and "eye candy" for commercial promotion. If so you probably WOULD be better served by purchasing a few fan or entertainment magazines and plastering your bedroom walls with the pictures in them. (Side note: an unfortunate cultural fallout of the demise of the vinyl LP is the loss of "album cover art". Some of it had significant artistic merit, and it came as a bonus when you purchased the recording.)

As already mentioned there are probably less expensive ways to deal with travel and accommodation costs. Let me add that I can't imagine spending a day in London - or a weekend, or even a month - and exhausting the list of interesting things to see and do.

Sounds too expensive for me. It's just some pictures... Do you want to spend a couple of hundred dollars to see some pictures?

oldbag agony auntHi

If its only 2hours away you don't need to stop over, plus you can go by coach which is less money and stop in a Hostel if it's too late to travel home, there's good ones and they're cheap.

Find out if the Exhibition will be showing around the UK eventually,or if any of the band will be going, then make a decision.
