Irrational fears concerning sex pregnancy and condoms?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi, so I want to have sex for the first time but I am afraid I'm going to get pregnant. I will use a condom but I'm so afraid it is going to break because I have heard all those stories. If I get pregnant my parents will kill me and they obviously won't get me birth control. I talked with my boyfriend and we are both ready. Is this an irrational fear?

person12345 agony auntNo it's not irrational. But as long as you're careful, the condom shouldn't break. Some tips, get the right size. Also, put a drop of water or silicone based lube in the tip to prevent unneeded friction. Just try to relax a little. Follow the directions on the box and you'll be fine. Most condoms break due to incorrect use (i.e. people in the heat of passion just throwing it on without paying attention and/or using the wrong size). Try to relax to enjoy the experience. If you're too worried about getting pregnant you won't have a good first time. There's always plan B, which at your age you can get at any pharmacy counter if the condom breaks or slips off, and you'll definitely know. Relax, condoms very rarely fail unless used totally incorrectly.

Midge agony auntLord No! Your fears are totally rational! I had the same fear when I first had a sex for the first time. The fact you are stressing about it means that you have thought your decision through, which is a sign of maturity.

If you use a condom, yes its not 100% safe, but its better than nothing at all! I wasnt on birth control and I used a condom and I never got pregnant. My boyfriend was gentle so as to ensure the condom didnt break, and whatever you do, make sure you use a reputable brand of condom. You can get cheap brands that tend to split during sex, so a good brand does make a difference.

If you use a good condom that fits well and is put on properly, and he is gentle, you should be fine. In the event the condom splits, you have the backup of the morning after pill that you can get from any pharmacy. But that really is just a backup plan.

Good Luck and I hope these few tips, which Im sure you are aware of, helps you calm your nerves!
