In reality, if my boyfriend is depressed, it doesn't really affect me. Why?

A female Canada age 30-35, anonymous writes:

How do you care about someone? My current boyfriend, along with all my other boyfriends in the past, have at one point or another complained that I do not care about them enough. I always thought that I did not care about my ex-boyfriends because I do not like them enough. I do like my current boyfriend a lot though, still I find it hard to really care about him. For example, if he has had a bad day and is depressed, it really does not bother me at all. I would say things like hope you feel better or try to comfort him, but in reality him being depressed does not affect me. Why is that? Is this because I don't like him enough? Or is there something inherently wrong with me?
