Tomorrow is going to be my first interview and I have no idea how things go and how to make an impression. Please tell me all the dos and don'ts that I should know for my interview ASAP and thanks in advance.

Thank you to all those who commented here. I too have got some interview lined up shortly (probably next week) and you all really helped a lot. But issue being here, some of my friends have started to tell me be cautious about ethical standards as the company i am going to be interviewed is a tobacco manufacturing and marketing company. (Though I don't smoke myself)

Got Issues agony auntDress smartly and look smart overall. Nice hair, clean, ironed clothes. Arrive a little early so you have a chance to sit down, take a few deep breaths and calm your nerves.

Be friendly and polite with everyone. Make eye contact, smile but be professional. You want to present yourself as someone that people can see themselves working with.

Find out what you can about the company and tell them what you know. If there is anything about the company that genuinely impresses you, let them know. They will be flattered, and it also shows that you're not just randomly applying to jobs for the sake of it, but that you've sought out that company and bothered to do your homework.

Always provide more details than just yes or no or I don't know. One-worded answers will get you nowhere. If you don't know the answer to a question, try not to get too flustered. Ask the interviewer to repeat the question or give you an example, and if you're still unsure, ask if you can come back to the question later in the interview.

The interviewer may ask you about your strengths and weaknesses. Obviously it's important to be positive and emphasise your strengths, but it's equally important that the interviewer sees that you are aware of your weaknesses and willing to work on them, so do be positive. For example if you are shy, you could say, "I'm a little bit shy but I'm constantly working on this (mention something you do to increase confidence, drama, a team sport, creative writing class) and my confidence has improved a lot in the last couple of years".

Ask lots of (interesting) questions at the end. Apparently the worst thing you can do is say no when they ask you if you have any further questions. It shows that you think you know all there is to know about the company and, more importantly, you are not interested in learning more. I've used some of these questions in interviews:

It's a nice idea to finish the interview by asking for some feedback on your application and interview so be brave and ask away, you've got nothing to lose. Make a note of any feedback you do get, accept criticism graciously and make it your mission to work on any areas where the interviewer suggests you could improve.

Good luck!

A female reader, Abella United States +, writes (29 April 2013):

Abella agony auntBe prepared by working out some key answers now. You should not try to parrot those answers verbatim at an interview, but some key points should be part of your answer.

Stand in front of the mirror and practice introducing yourself confidently. Practise some possible answers to questions like:

"Why do you want to gain this position?"

"What can you bring to this position"

"What are your ambitions in five years and ten years?"

Dress according to your culture in what is regarded as smart business like clothing in your culture.

NO to any annoying giggling.

NEVER interrupt the interviewers

LISTEN very carefully as the interviewers speak.

It is OK to jot down some key points to speak on as they are saying their question, if your answer is likely to be complex. This helps to ensure that you cover every point in your answer

PAUSE very briefly to gather your thoughts before launching into your answer. This also helps to calm any nerves too.

Do NOT speak too quickly as this will mean that part of your answer is lost.

Remember the Customer is the MOST important person. and A Customer is ANYONE you deal with in your working life. That means external customers are the TOP priority but just as important is being able to foster harmonious co-operative interactions with your internal customers - that means your co-workers.

Your level of COURTESY will be noted in the interview.

Know some things about the place you hope to join if this interview is successful. Google the place. learn more about what that place offers

Be professional and courteous. Find out the names of the interviewers before the interview if possible, and if not possible write down their names as soon as you know them and from then on use their names in the interview.

Take a pen and notepaper in with you in case you want to write down anything that strikes you as very important during the interview.

Do NOT be late for the interview.

ANSWER each question. Do NOT just answer with YES or NO. At the same time do NOT ramble on too long with each answer.

Interviews usually last for a set period of time or less. Interviewers are inconvenienced by people who talk too much.
