A female reader, Basschick Australia +, writes (5 July 2007):

Basschick agony auntThere are a number of things that could be stimulating your heart rate:

Caffeine (cokes, coffee, tea and chocolate can be the culprit).

Sugar can also speed up the heart rate and make you shaky and weak feeling as well, especially if you haven't eaten anything else.

Stress. If you're feeling hyped up while you're at work, home, or school, the best way to re-direct your heart rhythm is through exercise. Try taking a brisk walk when you're feeling stressed. It'll help burn off that nervous energy and clear your head. Also try focused breathing, taking a nice, long breath and exhaling slowly.

Certain medicines, especially when taken on an empty stomach -- even some Aspirin has caffeine and you may be sensitive to this.

Diet pills and other weight loss pills or vitamins can speed up the heart rate. Personally, this is why I don't take diet pills, because I don't like the way they make me feel.

And of course, physical activity will increase your heart rate (even sex) but it usually returns to normal after a few minutes of rest. Just be sure you warm up, and cool down afterwards to help your heart rate return to normal.

Nervousness - Also a form of stress. Try deep breathing, taking a stroll, usually it passes once the source is removed (i.e. the confrontation is over with etc.)

If all else fails, go see your physician. Nothing beats a good physical exam to rule out any potential problems you may be having. I hope this helps you out!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 July 2007):

Have you been taking some kind of drugs? Legal or ilegal? Things for asthma perhaps? Are you really worried about something? Have you had a recent problem or situation that overwhelmed you with fear? The reason of your problem depends on your answers to these or other questions your doctor may ask. If you are taking some medication to go to sleep or a decongestant is normal that you get tachicardia. If you've been through a lot of emotional struggle lately you may have developed an anxiety disorder. Maybe is just stress, but anyway you should seek medical help promptly so you can discard any serious conditions. A good exercise to calm down your heart is to inhale deeply and hold it,then exhale just a little bit and hold it again, just a little more and hold it again. Exhale little bits of air and hold it until all the air is out. Repeat this until you feel your heart starts to slow down. Be healthy!

A female reader, flower girl United Kingdom +, writes (5 July 2007):

flower girl agony auntHave you started drinking alot of tea or coffee recently?, as in large doses this can cause the heart rate to speed up.

If you are feeling tense or worried about something this could cause anxiety which can increase the heart rate as well.

Smoking more than usual is another cause.

Obviously i am just giving you some ideas of the possible causes, but you should always visit your doctor and get their opinion as they may run some tests.

Take care.xx.
