 Get used to it (looking stupid if/when you are rejected).... because THAT is what you will be "risking" every time - from now 'til the end of your life - when you approach a girl/woman who catches your eye.
The SECRET to "manhood" is to develop a strong, thick skin.... and oil on your back-feathers (like a duck!), so's you won't give much credence to it if/when she rejects you in some manner.....
P.S. It helps to develop an exquisite personality - as I have done - to approach these ladies that catch your eye.
Would you like a copy of my best-seller: "It's not you, it's ... OOOppps, wait a minute.... maybe it IS...." ?????

reader, anonymous, writes (21 October 2013): Just tell her you would be very happy if she can spare an evening to go out together, and plan ahead where you would take her prior to asking her out.just ask her in a plesant conversational voice.Don't panic if she says no, tell her you were hoping she accepts and the offer stands if she changes her mind. she will say yes if she is interested in you. If not there are plenty other fish in the sea.

Stop being a wimp. 4 months is too long, if you don't hop to it, someone else will.
Just ask her. Don't over think it. The only way you'll look stupid is if you say something blatantly stupid or make a dumb face. If she says no just say "Alright thanks anyways."
