A reader, anonymous, writes (14 February 2008):

All I can say is, I fell for my best friend's boyfriend (I'm straight), and got him basically, and now we've been together for 16 months. But my best friend never forgave me, and I lost her. I felt so guilty, but in a way, I'm glad I'm with him, because he makes me feel so special.

So my advice to you is, if you really think that you stand a chance with this guy, and your feelings are just totally unable to be hidden inside, then tell your best friend's boyfriend. Tell him how you feel about him, and that if he thinks this is inappropriate, you will not go any further. Reassure him you won't try anything, and you'll keep away as much as possible. This way, you get it sorted out, you know where you stand, and your best friend doesn't get hurt. However, if he says he likes you too, then it's only fair on your best friend if you both tell him together. Then, the story unfolds from there... Good luck :]
