Since then she has been off work with depression following a number of events. The thing is I miss her, think about her all the time, I have heard she is due to come back in about a month and I don't know what to do or how to react around her. I told my immediate manager about past events and she told me to have a serious think about how I feel. She's also been very good to me recently and I'm slightly concerned that I am developing feelings for her too I'm getting very confused

Romance in the workplace can be disaterous. It can cause complications should the relationship not fail. Getting involved with your BOSS is not a good idea in the least. It can cost one or both of you to be dimissed from your jobs.
The girl out on sick leave perhaps could use a friend but if she's is straight it could cause her to shy away from you and cause hard feelings.
The Boss Lady is probably trying to allow you to have someone to vent your feelings too. She is probably just trying to help you because if you care for someone and show concern for them, the problems they are having sometimes are lessened.
On either account I would say stay away from either of them in a romantic nature, unless you are sure of the consquences and that you are able to handle the situation should things turn sour.
Search for someone outside of your work to keep things in a better perspective and to help prevent anyone from having troubles at their jobs or from being fired.
God bless,
