A female reader, mc1r Belgium +, writes (17 December 2011):

red is a recessive gene.. for caucasian white parents counts: carryïng aominating recessive gene MC1R will give one a 50 to 80-ish percent chance of giving birth to a ginger fairheaded baby.. this I understood from a lecture i went to this summer.. but on the other side what does it matter what colour hair your child has.. shouldn't you love it just the same if it were a brown, a blonde or a blackhaired one ? I read an a article about a women who was so proud of finaly giving birth to a ginger... oh my god she was like so proud.. she had other children.. wasn't she proud of her other 'spawn'? I was shocked.. I hate favoritism it'll give children extremely low self asteem..

A female reader, anonymous, writes (8 May 2008):

If in the future I don;t really think by that time you'll be worring about the colour of your children just make sure they don't come out with multi-coloured hair and if they aren't lucky enough to come out with ginger hair then oh well just try again and hope.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 March 2008):

it is possible. i am a ginger and both of my parents are brunettes. the ginger color is a recessive gene so both parents of the child have to have ginger as their recessive hair color gene if neither of them are ginger themselves.

Why should it matter if your child has ginger hair?

You should love it just the same.

A female reader, cd206 United Kingdom +, writes (14 May 2007):

cd206 agony auntPossibly, but not because you're mixing blonde and dark hair. For your child to be ginger they have to get one ginger gene off you and one off their dad. Hair colour genes run in pairs so if each of you has one ginger in that pair then it's possible. However, I hope this question is hypothetical because 16-17 is far too young to be thinking of having babies.
