I agree with everyone else here and think you need to do a test as soon as/if you know yr period is late (you can purchase some tests that pick up the pregnancy hormone before yr period is due but you'll have to spk to the Pharmacist to find out which ones they are).

I think you seriously need to consider contraception, if yr in a serious relationship and intend to continue having sex I would suggest seeing your GP or Family Planning to obtain the pill and/or condoms. Remember the pill will avoid pregnancy but only condoms will keep away any sexually transmitted infections or diseases you could contract!

Lilly223 agony auntYou may typically take a pregnancy test as soon as you know your period is late.

Now.... Instead of relying on a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant (hopfully you are not) let's work on preventing a pregnancy in the first place.

When you make the decision to be sexually active, you take the responsibility on to protect yourself until you are mature enough and financially secure enough to raise a child. That means you need to be on (or obtain)some sort of birth control until you reach this point. If you are not taking birth control or using birth control you have a responsibilty to obtain it. Go to Planned Parenthood, or some similar organization and speak to them about it. You can also get a pregnancy test there if that is the situation you find yourself in.

I sincerely hope that you that you are not intentionally trying to get pregnant. I would hope not. You have far too much to loose to throw yourself in to adult life at this time in your life. The long term repercussions of this will impact you for the remaineder of your life. Please reconsider this if intentional pregnancy is your goal.

A female reader, stina United States +, writes (10 January 2007):

stina agony auntHi Anon,

Did you use protection? I'm guessing that you didn't from your post. If it's not been longer than three days, you can speak with your doctor about getting the morning after pill (aka emergency contraception). This is pretty effective at making sure that people don't get pregnant after unprotected sex, but it's not 100% effective.

While at the doctor's office, I suggest you ask about the various methods of birth control so this sort of scare doesn't happen in the future. If you don't want to have any hormones introduced into your system, then there's always condoms that you can buy at your local pharmacy (grocery store, conveneint store, etc).

And to answer your question, here's a blurb from a pregnancy website about taking tests:

Usually, pregnancy tests can be taken the day that your menstrual period is skipped. It should be completely safe if you are two days late. However, if you have irregular menstrual cycles, you may want to wait for an extra week in order to make sure that it is not your body changes instead of the pregnancy. The longer you wait, the easier it will be to receive a positive test result if you are indeed pregnant due to larger amounts of hormone. If you have taken a pregnancy test and the result is negative, yet you are feeling as though you are pregnant and your menstrual cycle has not started, then it is best to take another pregnancy test, perhaps a more sensitive one. You may be pregnant but the hormone level was not high enough when you took the test before and a re-test will give you the correct response.

maxsteel86 agony auntYou THINK you dont regret it? Hope not cos when your virginity's gone, it is gone like an ARG hitting a replicator in Stargate:-P

Well the pregnancy test kit wont work unless you take it around the time of your period. And you wont develop any signs of pregnancy for atleast two weeks, probably later (I've never been pregnant so cant be completely sure:-P)

Really though, if you took the precautions, you dont have to worry about it.

if u are worried you do need to do something to rest ur mind. take a test and get some advice from people, like family planning if you need too.
