reader, anonymous, writes (16 December 2006): This also depends on their age, emotional and mental maturity, and in some cases physical maturity, as well as their appreciation and tastes.
Some more 'superficial' than others, some more sentimental, some who like a mix of the both. Eg: my then 17 or 18 year old love interest when I was 21, loved Winnie The Pooh, so I got her a giant Winnie The Pooh - but a rare plush that you can't find in stores. Then I sprayed it with the cologne I wore at the time onto the bear, boxed it in a very nice metallic navy blue wrapping paper adorned with Winnie the Pooh prints in semi-transparent Pooh prints.
So she liked that sort of thing. It had a mix of 'superficiality' and sentimental value.
Another example would be something really practical like hand warmers that run on gasoline powered by a battery that I got for one of my ex's. At first she opened the kind-of tiny box and found hand warmers and she was happy right, because it was a nice gesture to her winter sports, but then when she opened the card, she found a round trip plane ticket and hotel getaway to Banff and well she was really happy about that.
As far as jewelry goes as Vina has mentioned, maybe you can customize the jewelry? Like have the jeweller inscribe a particular saying, or a wish of some sorts, or maybe add a extra pendant or 'chain loop' to a anklet or bracelet that symbolizes something between you two, etc.
CD's and perfume combination, and a card that says something like, heh, I don't know, but like if she likes to dance, she can wear so and so perfume to compliment her, and add something like a trail to her... [laughs] Yeah, can't think right now. Don't have the emotion to think about that sort of thing. 8]
Yeah there you go. Just some ideas.

 Perfume. Pop down to Boots and test the perfumes. Spray it, smell it, see if you like it and then buy it. I would suggest some really nice ones that I've tried but I don't want it to seem like I'm advertising or anything.
And a card, a nice one. What kind of music are they into? You might wanna get them some CDs. Jewelry from Claire's? Stuff from Accessorize? Wrap it up nice and I'm sure they'll love it.
