First of all, never refer to a previous relationship as a "mistake" refer to it as an experience =].
Secondly, I had the same problem as you, I was so shy around all the guys and couldn't pluck up the courage to say anything to them. Just tell this girl how you feel about her, and then ask her out. If you don't do it then you'll always wonder what could've been.
