A female United States age 30-35, *elissa. spoiled! writes:

I am in a LDR with my boyfriend who is back in Scotland, where is was born. He is 31 and I am 18. I want to go to Scotland to study at University, and also to start a life with him.

But i am not sure what criteria i have to meet to do this. And i need to get some advice before i make this move.

One part of my question is about educational requirements to get into a University in Scotland.

The other big question is about our relationship. He is very important to me.

But what if the unthinkable happened and we split up? Would i have to go back to USA to finish my studies? And would the US universities recognise my studies up to that time, (from Scotland university) to credit towards my studies resumed in US?

Basically I'm unsure of the GED counting for medical school and if going to live there to be with my b/f is really a good idea):

Do Scottish universities accept the GED? I know mostly all US universities accept it because it's a diploma. I went to the University of Glasgow site and the requirement field for medicine (I know, I probably won't get in medicine and don't know if medicine accepts a GED) said I had to have AAAAB and in specific classes. Of course, it's Scotland, it's different, no? Is the SAT most important? I always thought it beat your GPA and high school diploma, right? So uni will really be seeing my SAT score, no?

And what if my boyfriend and I break up? What will I do? I've had a hard time understanding his Scottish accent, how will I understand the professors? If I move there.. it will be to have a life with him.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (13 May 2011):

Hey, first of all I'm scottish and am applying to uni 2011/2012 including glasgow so I might see you there :P

1. As much as you might want to live with him, get university accommodation, that way if you break up you are living in accommodation already and wont be out in the streets, get a job as soon as possible also, but remember you may qualify for buraries or funding and you can get loans as well which you will need to pay back.

2. AAAAB is Scottish Highers which is our grading system, and those entry requirements are very high, you will also have to sit another test as well to apply for medicine, medicine is HIGHLY competative and as most people applying obviously have those grades, they literally count for NOTHING.

3. So you're wondering "why would the entry requirements count for nothing? well, not entirely nothing, you must achieve those grades for your university application to be considered, what seperates you from everyone else is your personal statement, you must apply to 5 universities through UCAS (check their website) everyone pays a fee to use this but its the widely know higher education application system, anyway yes, personal statement, spend a lot of time making this the best you can, its 4000 characters long (or 49 lines) this is what universities read and base their decisions upon, I suggest you get work experience in a hospital so you can put that in your statement, this is a great thing to do.

4. Along with this, medicine always have subject requirements and that is usually ENGLISH, MATHS, BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY then one other subject, which, if you're smart will be the final science, physics. So basically you must have the grade requirements in those subjects to apply and not AAAAB in say.. Art, History, french, spanish and Geography, even though you have the grades, you would not

have the subjects.

(I realised you mentioned this already but i'd leave it incase it helped you understand better)

5. Glasgow university could transfer you to a US univeristy they are linked to, you can transfers uni's for sure, which is why you have study abroad options, so for me as a scot, studying abroad would give me the opportunity to study at university in the US and yes they would recognise your studies and you would not have to start at the beginning again

You will certainly get used to scottish accents and perhaps amazed at how they vary between short distances, for example glasgow is different to edinburgh, I'd say

edinburgh accents are easier to understand.

Personally I see it like this

1. He's 31, if he was that serious surely he'd come to you rather than making his 18 year old girlfriend get up to her eyeballs in ridiculous debt to study abroad here in scotland?

2. Is he worth getting into thousands of pounds (dollars) worth of debt that you'll need to pay?

Abella agony aunthopefully there will be some people with the information at their fingertips on how to study/live in Scotland.

You did not say much about your 31 year old boyfriend in Scotland. Could he help answer some of your education questions?

What are his assurances that he has offered you about the strength of your relatiinship together?
