I want to gain weight!

Question - (9 March 2009) 1 Answers - (Newest, 10 March 2009)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I am 13 years old, turning 14 in a few weeks and am about 5'4?

I weigh exactly 100 lbs but everyone says I'm way too skinny. I also have sclerosis so one of my ribs sticks out and the other one doesn't. It's not that noticeable at all unless I'm in a bathing suit. I'm sick of everyone asking me if I'm anorexic and guys saying that I have a gorgeous face but my body isn't nice. What should I do? I want to gain weight but not over do it either. I always thought I was perfect the way I am and had high self esteem but now I consider myself hideous. Any advice?

k_c100 agony auntDont take any silly supplements or drinks like that anonymous reader has said, there are much better natural ways of gaining weight.

Now first things first, you are a little too skinny for your height. But you are so young so you have not stopped growing, it is quite likely that over the next few years you will gain a few pounds and look a bit healthier. Dont try anything drastic as you might damage your body whilst it is still growing.

Protein is an excellent way of helping to put on weight, so eat lean meats like chicken and fish (fish will be excellent for you as it also contains essential fatty oils that are really good for you). Increase the amount of complex carbohydrates that you eat - brown rice, brown pasta and brown bread. Carbs are a notorious way to put on weight, but do it the healthy way by eating brown carbs rather than white processed carbs. This will stop you from being bloated too.

Increase your portion sizes gradually over time; start by adding a little extra to your plate and then increase it week on week so it gives your stomach time to expand. It is quite simple; the more you eat the more weight you will put on.

But make sure you do this in a healthy way instead of eating rubbish - dont eat loads of takeaways, chocolate etc as this wont help you gain weight, it will only clog up your arteries! Pasta dishes will be ideal for you as they are full of carbs, and if you put protein in there too (like some chicken or grilled meat of your choice) then you have a perfect meal to help you gain weight.

If after all this you still dont gain weight then you are just one of those lucky people with a super fast metabolism! You said that you have always been happy with your body, you should stay that way. Dont let silly guys influence the way you think about yourself. You were probably just born naturally thin and this is what you are given in life, you just have to accept it and make the most of what you have got.

Good luck!
