Keep it casual and light and if she says yes, great, but if she says no, you can just be like "cool, no worries, maybe next time".
Any girl with class will behave in a nice way so if she is mean to you over it, count yourself lucky that you get to see her true personality early.
You should be right - keep it light.

(Scenerio B) You: Hey, you have someone for the upcoming ball? / Her: No I don't know, why? / You: I was thinking to ask you if you would like to go with me? / Her: No, I have someone else in mind. / You: Oh, that's fine. Heh, maybe next time then. / Her: Yeah, whatever. / You: [Walk away and lick your wounds if any.]
Anyhow, screw asking her alone. Just ask her at her locker, or when she's at the library or walking up the stairs between classes, after classes, before classes, etc.
