A female age 41-50, anonymous writes:

i need some time to think about the relationship i am in. we have been dating for six months. we do care about eachother but both realize it's not the end of the world if we do breakup, it has only been six months. we are not arguing, have never been in a major argument, are seeing eachother exclusivly. the reason i need time to myself is because i have so much stress in the rest of my life right now. how long would be too long? what is the best way to bring this up? what does a man think when a woman asks for time apart?

A female reader, AngelofLove United Kingdom +, writes (17 January 2007):

AngelofLove agony auntHow long will depend on you both, my personal opinion would be 2 weeks. Any more than that, he may get lonely and look elsewhere. As I do not know your boyfriend, cannot tell for sure.

The fact that you feel like taking a break, means that you need it.

If is it to do with outside relationship issues, explain to him that it is not him but simply you need some space.

He may need some reassurance but if he understands that you really need a break, he will respect that.
