I think it's time to stop lying and fess up!

Question - (7 December 2009) 4 Answers - (Newest, 12 December 2009)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

To get to the point he's 26, I'm 16. We've been [secretly] dating for over a year and out of paranoia(if that makes sense), I've never told my parents.

He's my mother's best friend's son and helps my father out a lot. So there's a lot of trust going on here. My parents are also over protective.

I just think it's time to stop lying and fess up. I mean honesty is the best policy, right? How should I approach them about this? What are some expected reactions?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (12 December 2009):

Is the age of sexual consent 18 in the states?! That's crazy! Here in the UK it's 16 for sex/marriage etc but 18 for age of majority, so drinking smoking voting etc.

It's even 16 for homosexuals too in the UK, so if e.g. you are a 16 yo guy you can have a 50 yo boyfriend if you so wish! :P Not illegal, but still frowned on by most circles, including the gay scene I would imagine

But if you are breaking the law keep quiet!! When you are 18 you can be honest. Under-age sex - even though it's not "wrong" because you both consent really, will be seen as statutory rape by law, and your BF will be marked as a sex offender for life. Even saying you're only dating, 'fessing up will make everyone suspect him, and reputation/rumour can still land you both in trouble. So keep quiet!

PS - You guys in the US need to crush the religo-political right wing and sort those laws out! The US is the only place I know of where people call people "liberals" as an insult! Here in Europe being a 'liberal' is what the majority of people aspire to, and indeed say they are.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (8 December 2009):

I'm gonna be frank... unless you two are, shall we say, making the beast with two backs... you aren't doing anything illegal.

It isn;t illegal to date anyone of any age. However, due to puritanical laws in U.S. society which are very much behind proper civilised societies, the legal age of consent is the insane age of 18 (any decent society holds this law to be 16, cause if you cannot decide if you want to have sex and do it safely by then... then you don't deserve to pro-create).

So whilst you two live in the U.S. and/or you live at your parents house unfortunately all you can do is date and makes out.

There is now laws against dating. Remember that.

A male reader, Mr Me United States +, writes (7 December 2009):

Mr Me agony auntmmmm, I think he'd actually be in a lot of trouble considering you're 16. No? He could end up in jail for a very long time depending on what state you live in.

Just keep that in mind.

eyeswideopen agony auntIf you were my daughter here's what you could expect:

Anger and disappointment that you been sneaking around and lying.

Loss of privileges for awhile.

Total cessation of this relationship until you reach the age of 18.

If you are living under your parent's roof, it's their rules.
