The beauty of finding someone online is that you CAN talk to them. It's not as nerve-racking as actually going up to the guy (and Ponungalungb is right. It might not even be HIM in the picture. But let's assume it is...). You just have to type out something and press send.
I'd say type something out and then take a deep breath and press send. You have nothing to lose! It's not nearly as bad as trying to go up to this guy in public.

How do you know it was a picture of him? I've heard of people using photographs of models to attract women, or men.
There was a local guy that sent a woman that he met online, $50,000. He fell in love with her photograph and her ability to con him. He left his wife of 20 years, sold his home, and drove 2500 miles to move in with this woman. When he arrived at her home, he knocked on her door, only to discover that she was about 20 years older than she said, looked nothing like her photo, and last, but not least, had her husband at her side. The husband told this guy that his wife "did this all the time, because she was f*ckin' crazy."
Be careful who "runs you over with a bus." LOL.
