During a discussion with him about my friends’ mixed race and culture relationship I told him that I reassured her by saying that different cultures just come down to differences in music, dancing and food! Did you ask him specifically why it upset him?
If not I suggest you do so, perhaps this is just one of his peeves, one which you'll know in the future and steer clear from. Some people can be very sensitive about issues of race and culture. Believe it or not there is still a huge stigma attached to mixed race relationships and in some cultures it's still very taboo, maybe he's from just such a culture.
