every work place has a culture and it sounds like this was an especially nasty workplace. Such nastiness should not happen but it does. But not everywhere.
Be more observant in the beginning. Certainly watch and learn. Initially the aim is to fit in. So observe. Don't try to be everyone's friend at first.
Keep yor desk area tidy and your filing up to date always. Document what you do always so that there is always a dated signed record of what you have done, where and to whom. This allows a record to prove how much work you do. Recording your work in the Tasks area of Outlook is a good easy and cheap way to do it. Organised under the surname of the client. One set of tasks per client
If there is a workplace facility (inhouse) where coffee/tea can be made then notice when it is most often used. If you notice people all tend to congregate at a certain time for coffee then just happen to go there at that time and say hello to the person standing next to you.
Ask questions such as where is a good place to have lunch around here. With luck you might get an invite to join them.
Arrive a bit before start time and never arrive late. Stay a little bit over time and never leave early. Find out the Norms in the area about lunch - when can you take it and how long can you take.
If there is anything like a social club attached to work the join it. If alcohol is served then never over-do it at a work funtion.
if it looks like being as nasty as the previous group then check out bullyonline.org for more clues
