HI: I need as many replies as I can get. The thing is that I'm applying for a professional job for the first time. The ones that you get with a college degree and are full-time. I know that those jobs require that you pass a drug test and while I'm technically drug-free I do use regularly prescribed/controled medication. I really need them to cope with the interviews and new people and social stress. I've been told that the medication I use for anxiety (a narcotic from the benzodiazepine family and similar to Xanax) could result in giving a false positive in "opiates" in a drug test.

I just want to know if the fact that I use this medication could hurt my chances of being hired. I have proof they are prescribed medication, but is not like I'm going to the Psychiatrist or are some kind of certified mentally disabled person protected by the ADA.

I know of those beverages you buy that help you pass a urine test. But what if it comes as a surprise? What if they do a blood or hair test instead of a urine?

stina agony auntHi Anonymous,

You will be dealing with medical personnel when you take the test, so just tell them about the medication that you're on and give them the proof you've spoken of (show them the medication bottle, note from your doctor, etc.) and there shouldn't be a problem. Unless this job prohibits you from having gone to a psychiatrist, etc then you shouldn't have any problems. (I've worked for a police station before and am currently in the defense industry and that's what I've experienced in both fields.) ^_^

Take care.

It's possible that they will do a blood or hair sample but it is quite doubtful since it is quite expensive - it depends on the type of company.

If you are using prescription medication legally then why would it be a problem? You would have evidence that you have been prescribed the drugs from whoever prescribed the drugs to you.

I get the feeling though you are using prescription medication illegally which means you aren't technically drug-free at all are you? I'm fairly sure xanax-type drugs will show up on a drugs test since they are looking for people who exhibit dependancy on drugs for the very situations that you mentioned.

I don't really know of any evidence about those tests working well. The best thing you can do is work out the half-life of whatever drugs you are on, stop taking them as long as you can and then drink plenty of water.
