A female reader, cd206 United Kingdom +, writes (25 May 2007):

cd206 agony auntDo you live together? That's a pretty big commitment that in my opinion should always be made before marriage. If you've already done this why not do something personal to show her how you feel. This will have to depend on both of your shared interests and experiences. As for scaring her off with talk of marriage I don't think many people nowadays are 100% surprised by a proposal. Most people talk about getting married and their ideals regarding houses and kids and pets etc ages before they propose. Maybe you could initiate a conversation about how much you love her and hope you can be together forever and see where it goes....
