reader, anonymous, writes (7 April 2007): i think all those people who think it is weird to date your best mate's cousin are dumb. there is nothing wrong with that.
even if you do break up, i think you can still be friends with best friend. i mean why not? where is the need to act like a silly person and say 'we can't be friends any more coz you broke up with my cousin'
if that case, you should not even date someone you meet through your friends, coz if you break up, you will have to 'choose' one person.
how stupid. grow up.

 Ok, you are 12 and a wise young lady - smoking is disgusting. There is nothing wrong with 'dating' your mate's cousin in principle, although at 12 I would rather hope you wouldn't be contemplating anything too serious and that this guy is around your age. Anyway, if you split up...and you will...you still have to see him if you remain friends with your girl-mate...best mate, or random boy...now I know which one I would choose...a best mate is worth much more. At 12 you have loads of time for dating when you are older and when guys are likely to treat you better. He smokes, you will grow to hate him for it as the smell gets everywhere and you are passive smoking around him and he will try to get you hooked on fags because smokers always do that! Think hard before going out with him.
