this means you both really like eachother :)
everyone has been through this at some point, it can really damage the relationship if you don't sort it out, but instead of not giving him any signals at all when he's around, if your too scared to aproach him give him a smile, or a little eye contact to show you're thinking off him. That way he won't back off.
You'll find that it's much easier to chat and hang out when it's just the two of you, so go to the cinema, with him, that way you can make a move, and have something to talk about after the date :)

 Yeh this can happen, just find something to do that you feel comfortable doing, going shopping, cinema whatever, you need to get used to seeing him and spending time with him, youll be surprised how quickly u can become comfortable with something, if you both like each other a few hours of awkwardnes will be worth it in the long run...right? Btw does he know your 'scared' because if not he might think you dont like him, he should understand if your shy, and that you need to get comfortable with him. Good luck
