Well, I too have discharge problems and I was always told that there wasn't. But, why does that not make sense? Because discharge is apart of your reproductive system and so it has to do with weither or not you have your period. If you don't it is most likely an infection.

Wendyg agony auntHi,

Well that rules out an STI or an STD so thats a good thing!

It can however still be an infection. We dont have to be sexually active to contract PID this can just be caused by tampon use or anything that the vagina feels uncomfortable with, its caused by a bacteria which is why its normally associated with a sexaully transmited disease, but as I said can be contracted without sexual contact but is rare. There are various symptoms anything ranging from the discharge to a dragging feeling lower down in the abdomen, to irregular periods, back pain and so on. It is less likely that you have this, but it doesnt mean that you dont have some sort of infection that will require treatment.

As i dont know how long you have been experiencing this or how often you get it i wouldnt like to say leave it, just in case its something that needs to be looked at sooner rather than later.

If this is something that has maybe happend 2-3 days after a period then it could be quite normal. If its mid cycle it could be spotting but its hard to say not knowing your history.

To be on he safe side and as you say its got an odour I would get this checked out. I myself have had an infection that wasnt caused by sexual contact, just one of those things, like getting an ear infection, if its going to happen its going to happen and can be relatively simple to clear up, but its always best to get treated sooner rather than later.

Just as a guide most discharges are relatively normal, but any sudden change should be looked at medically, especially if its accompanied by an odour or a colour.

Take care im sure It will be okay, its great that your are so aware of what your body is doing.

Thanks so much for your help. I am scared about this. Im not sexually active yet and dont plan to be for quite a long time. But i do want kids, and definately dont want to be infertile. I cant have a STD or STI, as i havent had sexual contact. Do you think i could leave it for a couple more days and just see if it gets better? and if not i will see a doctor or tell my mum. Could i just ask, is their any symptoms that come with this infection thing?

Thanks again x Please reply again x

Wendyg agony auntHey hun, You do really need to seek medical advice on this. Nothing that I can tell you to do will cure this naturally if its an infection. Im not sure if your sexually active, but if you are its quite possible that you have contracted an STI or STD.

It cant be narrowed down to one thing just from what you tell us here. If your sure its not the tail end of a period(often leaves a brownish discharge) and it does have an odd smell, then you really do need to get it checked out... A discharge like this happens when the vagina is not happy or has an infection, the longer you leave the infection the harder it will be to clear, the longer its left it can lead to a number of other problems such is PID (pelvic inflamatory Disease) One STI that springs to mind is Chlamydia... this often goes unnoticed for a long period of time with no symptoms, but can sometimes have the discharge you mention, its relatively simple to cure by a strong does of antibiotics, but has to be prescribed by a doctor. If this is left the long term effects can lead to inferitility. Yes it all sounds scary and we dont like people fiddling with our bits, but hun in the long run you will be glad that you did. You cannot leave this, the longer you do the worse it will get, it will not clear on its own.

The only other thing I can think of is that if you are on the mini pill that it could be whats known as spotting, slight bleed in between periods, and that can be normal, but as you say there is a smell, you do really need to get this looked at.

We all get discharges from time to time, but we are always warned that if its foul smelling, has an odd colour or lasts for several days/weeks then it has to be looked into further. Please go and get this checked out.

Take Care x
