I even got him a silly cake to make sure he had a smile on his face. I was hoping we would spend the day as a family but all he wants to do is go out with his mate and get drunk. i feel so put out as he has made it very clear that i am not welcome. am i wrong to feel slightly upset by this?

I don't think your wrong to feel upset by this. It was a big day and all you wanted to do was spend his birthday with him and your child. Talk to him about it.
