reader, anonymous, writes (27 May 2009): Hi :)My sister has PCOS. Was diagnosed a few years back. Quite severe, she has a big cyst in her left ovary. The good news is that with hormonal therapy (the pill), this cyst has decreased in size. The pain she feels with her period has decreased significantly. She also has insulin resistance (IR), which is usually related to PCOS. Due to the treatment for IR, she also lost weight. She has had to go to checkups regularly, but she's been doing great.Ok, so with the pill she did lose a lot of these androgen-based problems, like hirsutism and acne. You know, there are some creams that can help you get rid of the hair, painlessly I believe, and are better than shaving (also more expensive, but still). Nair, Veet... I don't know which ones they sell in Mexico. Honey, I know it must be difficult to deal with a condition like this. I also have IR, I don't have PCOS though. But I was gutted when I was diagnosed. I felt awful, especially since I had to give up candies and most sweet stuff (which I confess I love), because I risk getting diabetes. It sucks to think that you have a "condition" that has to be treated. I also felt very bad, I hated to think I wasn't really "heatly". But the good news is that there are treatments. I know you feel alone and like no one understands, but let me tell you a secret: sadly, a lot of girls have no idea that they have PCOS, until they're diagnosed. I bet you didn't even suspect you had it until you were diagnosed. It happens to a lot of girls too, although it's not a vey good thought, but trust me, PCOS is quite common. I was actually quite shocked to learn that when my sister was diagnosed (as a teenager, I think she was 16 or 17) she talked about this with her classmates and like 3 of them also had it. So don't feel alone or misunderstood. I know it can be a confidence killer, but once you get proper treatment, the cysts can even disappear I believe. Other symptoms like hirsutism decrease and become more manageable, you can always look very pretty and healthy. My sister does, and she had quite a severe cyst. Don't worry, and smile like someone else said. Trust me, I know how much it sucks, but you will learn to live with it and feel good about yourself again. Nobody can tell you have this unless you tell them, which means you already look pretty and healthy. Honey, this is not really a reason to not wear a bikini or enjoy summer. Enjoy sunny Mexico :PBest wishes!

i think there may be a drug that you could take which would reduce hair growth it is an antiandrogen drug called spironolactone, its often used as a diuretic, in recovery after heart failure, to treat hypertension and to treat hirsutism. an antiandrogen stimulates or controls the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics such as the growtn of hair in women. i'd ask your doctor about it as the success rates are fairly high and it could save you some embarrasement and spending a lot on hair removal, i hope this helps! feel free to message me if you'd like any further help, take care xx
